Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
